Battles alone can hardly be profitable.
The winning army takes the supply train of the defeated army, which is equal to the 24 hour upkeep of the destroyed army. The victorious army also restores twice as many units after the battle. However an invading army will almost always lose money due to the travel expense. (exceptions are only the cases when units meet their antis - cavalry killing archers for example)
The defending army has a greater chance of being profitable from a battle because they dont have to pay for traveling. Over all battle will rarely be profitable on their own.
The profit lies in what happens after the battle. The battles are just the means to reach a goal. The goal to take the enemy's fortress with all the resources in it, the goal to kill the enemy's villagers for gold and hampering the production of a province..... this is where the profit is from battles. _________________
